"When I want a taste of heaven, I start by walking into our sunny garden and pulling my bicycle from the messy cubbyhole we have out there. Five minutes later, I will be bowling down a quiet lane, completely transported by the combination of motion, silence and tranquil independence that is the joy of cycling.

There are a lot of us bikers around and numbers are growing. Recent surveys by Sustrans, the cycling charity, indicate that around half of all Britons now own a bike. A form of transport that was once a mark of mediocrity is now a sign of something far more fashionable. Celebrities such as Madonna, Elle Macpherson, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Meryl Streep, Boris Johnson, Agyness Deyn, Fearne Cotton and David Cameron are all bikers. And commuters with their foldaways and children doing wheelies are all members of the same great democratic club: the one that makes us healthy, saves petrol, eases tension and, above all, offers fresh views of our beautiful country."
